Connect an AI app to Clio today

Create the connector in Zapier
Open Zapier MCP, pick Clio, and connect your Clio account. Zapier gives you a personal MCP endpoint. Treat it like a password.

Enable only the tools you need
Start with the search tools: find matters, find contacts, find bills. Leave create and update actions off until you have watched the assistant work for a week.

Add the endpoint to your AI app
In Claude or ChatGPT, add a custom connector and paste the Zapier URL. Sign in when asked.

Test on something you know
Ask for a matter by its Clio ID and compare the answer with the Clio screen. Only then let it touch anything.

Find the matter with ID 1042. Show its name, status, and responsible attorney. Do not change anything.
Use a matter you know well and compare the answer with the Clio screen. If it matches, widen the tools. If it does not, you found out on a test, which is the point.

Frequently asked questions
Does Clio have its own MCP server?
Not as of the review date. Clio offers an API and marketplace integrations; MCP access goes through Zapier or a custom bridge your developer builds on the Clio API.
Is this the same as Clio Duo?
No. Clio Duo is an assistant inside Clio. MCP is the other direction: it lets an outside AI app reach into your practice data.
Does Referent's MCP server connect to Clio?
No. The Referent MCP server at https://mcp.referent.law/mcp connects AI apps to your Referent workspace: its clients, matters, and documents. It does not reach into Clio. If your data is still in Clio, use the route above; if you move to Referent, MCP comes with the account.
What is MCP, in one paragraph?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI apps such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini use outside tools and data. A system exposes an MCP server; the AI app connects to it and can then look things up or take actions there, within whatever permissions you gave it. It is how an assistant stops guessing about your matters and starts reading them.
